Pohang: making physical AI

Original media. Embedded text and audio remain in their source languages; this is not a dubbed or translated media edition.

Web editorial adaptation

Pohang brings industrial demand, university research, manufacturing skills and field robotics into one regional map. The source cards explicitly identify this as desk research, not a tour of every pictured facility.

POSTECH's Apple Manufacturing R&D Accelerator information confirms a Pohang-based training program. That is a different kind of asset from a factory, robotics research organization or proposed robot foundry. The foundry proposal and conditional later phase in the original cards remain plans, not completed capacity.

Start with the task: what work needs doing, who supports the machine, and what would count as repeated useful operation? A regional cluster supplies leads, not a performance guarantee.

POHANG — South Korea’s Steel City Meets Physical AI 🇰🇷 A robot needs a task. Pohang has plenty worth investigating. On South Korea’s east coast, this industrial city brings together steelmaking, university research, manufacturing skills and field robotics. Four starting points: 🏭 POSCO An industrial base with practical automation challenges in inspection, maintenance, safety and material handling. 🎓 POSTECH Research and engineering talent to turn technical ideas into working systems. 🛠️ Apple Manufacturing R&D Accelerator Training for Korean manufacturers in machine learning, predictive maintenance and quality improvement. 🤖 KIRO The Korea Institute of Robot and Convergence works on robotics research and industry support, including underwater construction robots. Neuromeka also reports local production facilities and a joint research lab with POSCO. Another development to watch: a robot foundry proposal with approximately KRW 180 billion in planned total investment. The MOU was signed on 9 September 2026; phase two remains conditional on project requirements and further agreement. B2AGI take: Pohang’s strength is the range of work a robot could be asked to do. The useful questions start there: What task can it handle? How much help does it need? What does each completed job cost? Can it do the same tomorrow? The Smart Manufacturing Forum at POSTECH, 16–17 September 2026, offers another opportunity to explore these questions. Cards map the landscape. Field reports follow the work. 📍 Pohang · Gyeongbuk · South Korea 🔎 Access: Desk research Sources: POSTECH · Apple Accelerator · KIRO · Neuromeka · Gyeongsangbuk-do Scope: Existing institutions, company reports and announced plans.
